Meet Green Tara

Green Tara, meaning ‘Star’ in Sanskrit, is a female bodhisattva of compassion in Tibetan Buddhism. She is particularly renowned for her power to overcome the most challenging situations, providing protection and solace against dangers.

The history of Green Tara traces back to ancient India, where she was revered as Tara. She was considered an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Durga, who personifies strength and victory.

In the 7th century, Tara was introduced to Tibet by King Songtsen Gampo. He married two princesses, one Chinese and one Nepalese, and each brought her own protective deity. The Chinese princess brought Quan Yin, the goddess of compassion in Chinese Buddhism, and the Nepalese princess brought Tara.

The Significance of the Green Color

In Buddhism, there are 21 forms of Tara, among which Green Tara and White Tara are the most revered. Green Tara is associated with protection and enlightened action, while White Tara is associated with compassion, longevity, and healing.
